Modane inclined tunnel

The preliminary works in the Maurienne valley for the future Lyon-Turin high-speed rail link consisted for the most part in boring two inclined tunnels for surveying, one in Modane and one in Saint-Martin-la-Porte.
The Modane tunnel was excavated by blasting and drilling in hard rock using two automated hydraulic jumbo drills 1,086 m into the tunnel, for an additional 2,800 m in length with a cross section of 56 m² and a gradient of 12%.

Highlight: Excavation work was performed at a steep gradient (12%) for three quarters of the tunnel, and completed 7 months ahead of the client's schedule.

Contracting authority: Lyon Turin Ferroviaire (LTF)
Project management: Lombardi
